Health and Science Research
Health and Science Research
Our commitment to helping people who smoke switch away from combustible and other forms of toxic tobacco use is crucial to public health. In determining our research priorities, Global Action considers the broad spectrum of ongoing, global research to identify important gaps in knowledge. Our grantmaking has the greatest impact worldwide, in part by considering the effect of research outcomes on communities with disproportionately high smoking rates. Our grantmaking focuses on research associated with smoking cessation, including the potential role of tobacco harm reduction, such as alternative, non-combustible, reduced-risk nicotine products.
In 2024, Global Action gave $7.6 million to Health and Science Research projects.
Cessation Education
Cessation Education
Our educational grants ensure that people who smoke and their health care providers have holistic evidence-based information on all the ways to quit smoking. We also educate smokers on the relative risks of nicotine. We fund innovative research and disseminate up-to-date guidance from leading health authorities to correct widespread misunderstandings in this complex area. This work raises awareness of the many smoking cessation strategies and tools available to help adults who smoke stop smoking and live healthier and longer lives.
In 2024, Global Action gave $6.4 million to Cessation Education projects.
Agricultural Transformation Initiative
Agricultural Transformation Initiative
In Malawi—where tobacco accounts for more than 60% of total annual earnings and 13% of gross domestic product—Global Action partners with agricultural, rural development, and smallholder tobacco farmers to provide alternative livelihoods. Our grants to Michigan State University and Land O’Lakes Venture 37 have positively impacted more than 75,000 farmers and their families.
Our commitment to the charitable purpose of transforming the agricultural sector in Malawi to enable smallholder farmers to diversify away from tobacco dependence is demonstrated by our grant that supported the construction of a permanent building on the campus of the Lilongwe University of Agriculture & Natural Resources. This structure, which serves as a hub for programs focused on innovation, science, and technology that promote agricultural transformation, was completed in 2024 and stands as a proud legacy of Global Action’s impactful work in this area.
In 2024, Global Action gave $5.2 million in support of the Agricultural Transformation Initiative.
